How many words should an ideal web page comprise of?

When we refer to a web page we mean a formal page setting out some aspect of your business such as your “About” page or “Services” page.

When we create pages for your website we aim to use about 600-700 words per page. This text may be supplied by you or you may want to use our using our copywriting service or perhaps do both.

Why? Forbes (US global media company) indicates that an average of 600-700 words per page is optimal for SEO. And, Forbes states that websites with less than 300 words per page are considered “thin” by Google’s standards and, most likely, won’t rank as highly in search.

We are not slavishly following this advise but bear it in mind when producing your copy.

To give you an exact idea of how much 300 words and 600-700 looks like I’ll mark it as I go along. It’s about 160 so far!

So when looking at the best amount of copy to write to improve your search engine rankings you need to think about several factors. The type of business you have and the complexity of your products and services will have a bearing on how much can be written.

Company websites will want to post information about their services, products, history, personnel, philosophy, etc. Some will need to display lots of legal information too such as governance, policies, terms and conditions etc.

There is no point going round and round in circles writing copy which repeats your keywords – it makes very bland reading and not like to rank highly.

Always start by trying to write engaging copy which in not repetitive and dull. Make sure you don’t lift it word for word from another website since Google will spot that and penalise your page in the rankings. Avoid filler text and not getting to the point quickly enough.

So far this article is just over 300 words long so 600-700 would be twice this amount.
